CyberSource Adds New IP Geolocation Capabilities to Counter Fraud

Merchants can now write business rules to evaluate orders by country, county, city and online access method

READING, UK, 10 August 2006

CyberSource Ltd., a leading provider of electronic payment and risk management solutions, today announced a new level of sophistication to its Internet Protocol (IP) Geolocation capabilities.  IP Geolocation, the process of evaluating the risk of an eCommerce transaction based on the geography of the customer, has long been a component of the fraud score CyberSource passed to its customers.  Now, merchants using CyberSource’s Decision Manager service can actually view the customer’s location—identified by country, county and city—to help them better determine whether to ship or not ship orders.  The enhanced service also detects the internet facility being used.  DSL and Cable services are typically deemed less risky than anonymised (“masked”) or satellite services.

This new CyberSource service gives merchants the ability to confirm additional attributes of an order automatically, without need for costly manual review.  Should an order be set aside for review, the enhanced IP Geolocation data, along with other order screening information, is readily available to reviewers through the case management system included in Decision Manager.  For more information on Decision Manager, please go to www.cybersource.com/decisionsolutions.

“This is the next step in order evaluation,” said Nathan Jackson, managing director of CyberSource. “Our customers have told us that in many instances, they need as much order specificity as possible to minimise their fraud.  We believe we are raising the bar with these added capabilities and helping our customers optimise their revenue potential.”

Key features

  • Merchants using both versions of Decision Manager (Standard and Advanced) can write business rules that dictate actions in case of geolocation inconsistencies.
  • Geolocation information will be available to all CyberSource Decision Manager customers via the built-in case management system.
  • A warning is sent to merchants if the system detects a risky or invalid IP address.
  • Custom rules can be devised that dictate different responses to different levels of geolocation mismatches (Decision Manager Advanced Edition only)

Availability and price
CyberSource’s enhanced IP Geolocation capabilities are available now, at no extra cost, as part of the company’s Decision Manager service. Current Decision Manager customers will not be required to make any changes to access the newly available data.
